In 2007, I had a conversation about the culture war with the evangelical pastor Tim Keller that I’ve never forgotten. Keller, who was the founder of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Manhattan, died last year, a devastating loss. “I’ve long seen friendships flourish across political differences,” he told me. He was seeing the change everywhere. Your political or theological positions were becoming the primary measure of your virtue, and your conduct was a distant second.

That’s how critics have described White Christian nationalism, a deviant strain of religion that has infected the political mainstream. But there is another cost to the spread of White Christian nationalism that no one mentions. The relentless coverage of White Christian nationalism is spreading a racist myth: that Whiteness is the default setting for evangelical Christianity. In a February 2023 survey, nearly two-thirds of White evangelical Protestants qualified as sympathizers or adherents to Christian nationalism. However, he rejects the political beliefs associated with White Christian nationalism.

There was very little that could be said about the 19 people who were eulogized on Saturday morning in a service at the University of Pennsylvania. Their names were lost, and not much about their lives was known beyond the barest facts: an old age spent in the poorhouse, a problem with cavities. They were Black people who had died in obscurity over a century ago, now known almost entirely by the skulls they left behind. Much more could be said about what led to the service. Jesse Wendell Mapson, a local pastor involved in planning the commemoration and interment of the 19, “has not come without some pain, discomfort and tension.”On this everyone could agree.

Fain’s sermonette underscores a trend that has largely gone unnoticed: The Social Gospel movement is making a comeback. Jemal Countess/Getty ImagesIt might sound like hyperbole to say that this resurgent form of the Social Gospel is changing our politics. He reached deep into the Social Gospel throughout the UAW strike, routinely deploying what one commentator called “strikingly Christian rhetoric.”Christopher H. Evans, author of “The Social Gospel in American Religion: A History,” said he heard the Social Gospel in Fain’s UAW speeches. “It (The Social Gospel) won’t have the institutional muscle it had before, but you could still have these voices and followers.”The climate in contemporary America seems ripe for the Social Gospel message. And the soaring optimism of old Social Gospel reformers may now seem as outdated as wobbly black-and-white silent films.

An Epic Pilgrimage Across Three Great Religions

Before there was tourism, there was pilgrimage: a trip of endurance, hardship and ecstasy in celebration of one’s faith. On an epic pilgrimage of his own, one writer ventures into the heart of three great religions in Bolivia, Mongolia and Iraq. The Imam Hussein shrine in Karbala the day after Ashura. “They’re poor, but they come thousands of kilometers for the love of Imam Hussein.” PILGRIMAGE WAS A great equalizer. “Labaik ya Hussein,” came the solemn chorus of surrounding voices.

Afterward his visit, Trump Jr. told reporters that the list of legal cases facing the former president will ultimately boosts his political cause. Trump has said he expects to win Iowa big as he defies the typical strategy of lowering expectations. Ron DeSantis, who is campaigning aggressively in Iowa, has criticized Trump for skipping the series of Republican presidential debates and campaigning only before large audiences. “In a time of war, and great heartache and trial, criticizing the leadership of our strongest Middle Eastern ally?” Brown said. “This guy was in the middle of watching moms and dads weeping over their little babies who had just been killed.”

In Iowa, where evangelical Christians dominate the first-in-the-nation Republican presidential caucuses, Rowland and other pastors are delivering a message meant to resonate both biblically and politically. While curbing abortion has for decades energized Christian conservatives like no other issue, the attack by Hamas and Israel's response have put new pressure on Republican candidates to hew not just to traditional Republican support for Israel but to beliefs rooted in the Bible. Some Christians support Israel due to Old Testament writings that Jews are God’s chosen people and that Israel is their rightful homeland. Some evangelicals believe Israel is key to an end-times prophecy that will bring about the return of the Christian messiah. Daniel Hummel, author of “Covenant Brothers: Evangelicals, Jews, and U.S.-Israeli Relations," said that Republican support for Israel has become a proxy for other conservative priorities, particularly on immigration.

The DeSantis campaign believes a win in Iowa might push other candidates from the field, leaving him as voters' primary alternative to former President Donald Trump, the current favorite. WASHINGTON, Aug 31 (Reuters) - Residents of Florida were largely spared a devastating blow from Hurricane Idalia this week, and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis also appeared to avoid the political peril that could have hurt his campaign for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination. DeSantis faced a similar test this week when he suspended his campaign to oversee his state's response to Hurricane Idalia. "The real work comes post-storm, and seeing what the damage is and how he reacts," Christian Ziegler, the head of the Florida Republican Party, told Reuters. In the lead-up to the storm, DeSantis held several press conferences per day, always flanked by a bevy of emergency response officials. On the other side, Republican Florida Governor Rick Scott touted his response to 2017's Hurricane Irma in a successful bid for U.S. Senate the following year.

Chipotle says its limited-edition Chicken al Pastor is boosting sales and attracting new customers. Chicken al Pastor was added to its menus in March, and according to CEO Brian Niccol, one in five customer orders at the chain now include the protein. "We've got a benefit because Chicken al Pastor has really shifted some of our customers from the more expensive beef into the less expensive chicken," CFO Jack Hartung said in an earnings call on Wednesday. Chicken al Pastor isn't just cheaper for Chipotle to make, it's also helping to attract new customers, the company said. Plus, it was a fairly straightforward dish to launch because it's made using Chipotle's existing adobo chicken, which is then mixed in an al pastor marinade.

July 26 (Reuters) - Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG.N) missed Wall Street estimates for quarterly sales on Wednesday, signaling that demand for its rice bowls and burritos was losing steam in the face of higher menu prices and waning household budgets. Like other restaurants, Chipotle has also hiked menu prices to offset the impact of higher input costs of everything from beef to potatoes, deterring lower-income customers from ordering its pricier meals. Comparable sales at the restaurant chain rose 7.4% in the second quarter, compared with analysts' average estimate for a 7.59% increase, according to Refinitiv IBES data. Total revenue rose 13.6% to $2.51 billion in the three months ended June 30, also below estimates of $2.53 billion. Good morning. Eric Kim had that opportunity recently at the restaurant Ensenada in Brooklyn, with the chef Luis Herrera. He wrote about it this week for The Times, and gave us an adaptation of Herrera’s recipe for fish tacos al pastor (above), which is our meal for this evening. It’s pretty cool — grilled fillets of buttery white-fleshed fish standing in for the more traditional pork, everything stained delicious with a complex, brick-red adobo, and served with pineapple pico de gallo and plenty of warm corn tortillas. These Fish Tacos Couldn’t Be More Brilliant

And in Herrera’s recipe, it will occupy most of your time, but the return on investment couldn’t be higher. The resulting mixture gives a warmth and complexity — a “Hmm, what is that?” — to an otherwise breezy al pastor. When he first opened Ensenada, Herrera used pale out-of-season tomatoes that diluted the bright coastal flavors he wanted to showcase in these fish tacos. But it’s not just the pineapple that makes this fish al pastor — it’s the char. Al pastor, “in the style of a shepherd,” is a method of barbecuing meat on a rotating vertical spit that Lebanese immigrants brought to Mexico in the late 19th century.

[1/6] Brazil's indigenous chief Raoni Metuktire takes part in a session of the Brazilian Supreme Court to debate the so-called legal thesis of 'Marco Temporal' (Temporal Milestone) in Brasilia, Brazil June 7, 2023. If it passes Congress, all eyes would turn to leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who has the power of veto. Indigenous groups, including members of the Xokleng community, protested outside the Supreme Court in Brasilia on Wednesday. Brazil's farm sector is also backing a bill in Congress that would set into law a cut-off date for land claims in 1988, the year Brazil's current Constitution was enacted. The hearing follows a setback for Indigenous people last week in Congress when the lower chamber passed the bill that limited the recognition of new Indigenous reservations.

With lawmakers in a stalemate about the debt ceiling, CNBC's Jim Cramer said Monday to put faith in defensive stocks like health care, discount stores, and natural gas. Cramer looked to the 2011 debt ceiling crisis for guidance, noting that even though history seems to be repeating itself, it's not as simple as finding what rallied after that deal was finalized. You want winners that stayed winners right through the worst of the debt ceiling talks," Cramer said. In the way of consumer-focused defensive stocks, Cramer pointed to Chipotle as a safe bet. "I wish I were less skeptical of a theoretical debt ceiling deal falling apart or coming together less than perfectly," Cramer said.
Like McDonald's , Chipotle said traffic to its restaurants grew during the first quarter despite higher menu items. Chipotle Mexican Grill on Tuesday reported quarterly earnings and revenue that topped analysts' expectations, fueled by better than expected same-store sales growth. In February, executives said January's same-store sales grew by double digits. Looking to the rest of the year, Chipotle is anticipating same-store sales growth in the mid-to-high single digits. It's expecting the same range for its second-quarter same-store sales growth, roughly in line with StreetAccount estimates of 5.8%.
Trump won 76% of the white evangelical vote in 2020, down from 80% in 2016, according to Edison Research exit polls.
